California Amplifier Inc., a Camarillo producer of equipment used in broadcasting television signals, says it has successfully completed an important test for MultiCipher, its wireless cable broad-band encryption system.

The test was conducted over a 10-week period at Oahu Wireless Cable Inc., a new cable system in Honolulu.

A spokesman said California Amplifier has moved into the final stage of product development and expects to start marketing the system shortly.

Wireless cable systems use terrestrial microwave transmissions instead of hard-wire coaxial cable used by traditional cable systems. The MultiCipher system is designed to protect wireless signals from piracy through the use of signal encryption.

Ira Coron, California Amplifier’s chairman and chief executive, described MultiCipher as “an extremely cost-effective, broad-band scrambling system for wireless cable operators.”

“We believe that MultiCipher will contribute to further sales growth of our wireless products in fiscal year 1996,” he said, adding that sales of the products have increased more than 40% in the first nine months of fiscal 1995.

Oahu Wireless is scheduled to launch 29 channels of TV service to Honolulu and its suburbs in February.

“We are very pleased with the successful test,” said Steve Berkoff, Oahu Wireless president. “We are moving forward with plans for system launch.”

California Amplifier’s products include amplifiers, down converters and integrated subsystems used in wireless cable systems, home satellite dishes and commercial satellite earth systems.
