LAMP Project

I read with enthusiasm your Dec. 21 article about the $106-million grant for the LAMP project. That is, I read with enthusiasm until I got to the fourth paragraph, where it stated that the money would not be spent on three of the four things teachers need most, but would be spent on two things that teachers do not need at all. How many of the millions will be spent on administrators “gathering data” and “analyzing the progress” while too few teachers continue to teach too many students with too few books and too out- of-date equipment in too dirty classrooms housed in too broken-down buildings?

Education needs more money, there is no doubt. But with priorities like these, LAMP is just business as usual-bureaucracy first, classroom last. MICHAEL HELWIG Canoga Park
