VENICE : Jan. 8 Home Renovation Is Group’s Next Self-Help Project for Oakwood

Oakwood United, a community group seeking economic improvement in the Oakwood section of Venice, has announced plans to continue a series of self-help projects this year.

The organization, along with L.A. Works, a nonprofit volunteer association founded by actor Richard Dreyfuss, plans to renovate a home at 611 Flower St. on Jan. 8. Community volunteers will work from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., painting the residence and building a fence around it.

“This is something we can do without scrounging for money from the government,” said Jim Bickhart, an Oakwood United member. “There are no development issues, it’s non-politicized, and it’s a manageable project that we can really crank out.”

The Jan. 8 project will be the sixth renovation effort mounted by Oakwood United in the past 17 months.

During a volunteer project on Nov. 19, more than 100 people turned out to help landscape, paint, repair and clean up Broadway Elementary School in Venice.
