Representatives of Hospice of the Canyon will answer questions about outpatient and nursing-home care for the terminally ill during a Jan. 18 program at Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys.

The first in a series for families coping with terminally ill members, the 7 p.m. program is free and open to the public.

“People have a lot of questions about putting someone in a nursing home,” said Pat Nolan, executive director of Hospice of the Canyon.

“There are a lot of misconceptions about hospices. People think that if they are given a tremendous amount of pain medication, they won’t be able to function,” Nolan said. “It just has to be administered properly.”

Future programs include “Must People Suffer? The Meaning of Pain” and “Care at Home: How Medicare Helps.”

Hospice of the Canyon provides outpatient care to terminally ill people who have six months or less to live and are either living at home or in a nursing home, according to Nolan.

“Death isn’t scary and it shouldn’t be scary,” Nolan said. “People should be able to enjoy what time they have left.”
