Motorola Profit Up 51%: The electronics company said earnings surged to record levels in the fourth quarter, led by strong growth in its cellular operations. Motorola earned $515 million, or 86 cents a share, beating Wall Street’s best estimate of about 75 cents a share. In the year-earlier period, Motorola earned $340 million, or 58 cents a share. Sales rose to $6.5 billion from $5 billion. The Schaumburg, Ill.-based company said that for the full year, it earned a stronger-than-expected $1.56 billion, or $2.65 per share, on sales of $22.2 billion. That compares to 1993 earnings of $1.02 billion, or $1.78 a share, on sales of $17 billion.
