WILMINGTON : Library Will Be Home for Historical Society
After waiting more than six years, the Wilmington Historical Society will finally get what it has always wanted--a room of its own.
The city of Los Angeles is renovating the former Wilmington Library building for the historical society, said Tom Kruesopon, spokesman for Councilman Rudy Svorinich Jr. The renovated building will house several other tenants, including the Wilmington police substation, a city department and offices for local, state and national government representatives, Kruesopon said.
Gwen Butterfield, president of the Wilmington Historical Society, said the group stores its archives and records at members’ homes. The society has wanted to relocate to the library since 1988.
“We’re very excited about moving,” she said. “It couldn’t be more appropriate for a historical society to be in a city historical-cultural monument.”
The library, built in 1927, was closed in 1988 when a new, larger library opened.
Kruesopon said the renovation should be completed within three months.
“It’s being remodeled inside and out,” he said. Funds for the renovation come from the city’s general services budget. The exact cost of the renovation was unavailable.
