CROSS WORDS

Share

One of my favorite things about Sunday is curling up with The Times. And I savor the crossword puzzle last, completing it in stolen moments on and off during the rest of the week.

I’m really not happy with the puzzle being in Calendar. The newsprint is harder to write on, and the pages of the section fall apart as you carry it around. Plus, others want this section for other purposes and carry it away.

All in all, a very uncomfortable adjustment. Though I do admit the larger size is nice.

I realize I can’t agree on every position The Times takes, editorial or otherwise. But I feel that your decision to move your Sunday crossword was a poor one for your readers.

The Magazine is the perfect format and environment for your puzzle. As much as I like my three-day weekends, part of me has always rued Memorial Day, Labor Day, etc., because I knew I’d have to deal with the sloppy newsprint and an unwieldy Calendar section.

Please reconsider. Who knows? I may “forget” to read the Magazine altogether, and I don’t think your advertisers would be pleased to know that.

Please don’t get me wrong. I love Sylvia Bursztyn and Barry Tunick, but after many years of solving their puzzles, I was ready for a new challenge. The Duo-Crostic was wonderful.

On one memorable occasion, after carrying around the unsolved Duo-Crostic all week, I turned to the solutions page and pleaded with my spouse, “Read me just the first word, please. I know I can solve it if I can just know the first word.” He did, and I did.

Please bring back the Duo-Crostic. I know I speak for a legion of frustrated fans.

TimesLink ID: UKUY83A Thank you, thank you, thank you for putting the Sunday crossword in Calendar.

Please continue to do so--it’s easier to read, and the softer paper is easier to write on. Today’s puzzle was a pleasure .

The decision to move the Sunday crossword to Calendar is to be applauded. Please keep the large box format; it is a help to us older puzzlers.

Now if you can be convinced to move the daily crossword to Calendar, it would be a giant step forward for puzzle fans. Playing hide-and-seek in the Classified section is not conducive to good humor in the mornings.

You couldn’t have given me a nicer Christmas present than to take the puzzle out of the Magazine! Now, if you never put perfume ads in Calendar, my life will be complete.
