A parolee was arrested and charged with killing his prison pen pal after she picked him up at the bus station the day of his release.

Frank J. Lee, 32, was charged with murder, officials said Friday. He was arrested near a shopping mall after police received a tip.

Lee is accused of bludgeoning 55-year-old Fran Smith to death after she picked him up Jan. 4. Authorities said Lee took her car, abandoned it and stole another car. Smith’s body was found Jan. 10.

According to court records, Lee spent much of his adult life in prison for such crimes as check forgery and car theft.
