Raymond Andrew Harmen; Meteorologist
Raymond Andrew Harmen, a longtime Camarillo resident, has died after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 77.
Harmen, a 41-year resident of the city, was the civilian planning officer for the environmental evaluation branch at the Point Mugu Naval Air Weapons Center. After leaving active duty, he remained in the U.S. Naval Reserve until 1975, when he retired with the rank of commander.
Harmen “was extremely concerned with the preservation of whales,” said a daughter, Jessie May Roybal, in a statement. “He asked that any donations be made to Greenpeace. He was a generous and loving man and will be missed by everyone he touched.”
Harmen graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1943 with a master’s degree in meteorology. During World War II he served in the Pacific. After the war, Harmen also earned degrees in chemistry, physics and mathematics.
He is survived by three daughters, Jessie, Rosalee Pauline Harmen of Camarillo and Letitia Blake of Belding, Mich. He is also survived by a brother, Vernon Harmen of Fremont, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
His wife, Letitia, died in 1988.
A visitation will be held Tuesday night at Pierce Brothers Griffin Mortuary in Camarillo. Services will follow the next day at 1 p.m. at St. Columba’s Episcopal Church, 1251 E. Las Posas Road, Camarillo.
