Sun Microsystems Posts Sharply Higher Profit: The Mountain View-based maker of workstations and servers credited strong demand for an 86% gain in profit during its second fiscal quarter. Sun earned $81.6 million, or 83 cents a share, in the quarter that ended Jan. 1. It earned $43.8 million, or 46 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue was $1.48 billion, up more than 30% from $1.13 billion. Workstations are powerful desktop computers linked in a network. Servers are computers that manage such networks. The company shipped more than 81,000 units in the quarter, an increase of 34% over year-ago levels.
