SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Everyone dresses well in Hollywood.

“If you make an excessive amount of money, you’d better dress well,” says one snobby industry insider. So how to anoint the 10 guys who do it best?

We asked everyone we know--People magazine-loving secretaries, glassy-eyed art-gallery denizens, silk tie-wearing executives, spiritually enlightened actors, iconoclastic producers, ascetic agents and bombastic executives. Some of whom nominated themselves. Just kidding.

In no particular order, here are the results.

* Mark Canton. This big cheese chairman at Columbia/Tri-Star wears the traditional big cheese power suits, but spices them up with eccentric footwear. He’s famous for his blue Doc Martens and purple high tops.

* John Solomon. The IMAX exec pushes Hollywood’s sartorial envelope with a style that’s a little Agnes B. mixed in with a little Comme des Garcons.

* Steve Martin. Great clothes. Great body for clothes. “He cares ,” says a fan. Prefers Comme des Garcons.

* Jack Nicholson. Just check out his fabulous golf clothes. (But don’t get too close to his Mercedes.) For a balding guy with a gut, he sure looks snappy.

* Johnny Depp. We just really liked that grunge sweater cap, that scruffy leather jacket and those big “Mod Squad” sunglasses the sensitive/temperamental actor wore when he was arrested for reassembling that New York hotel room. So there.

* Bill Block. This volatile, swims-in-an-icy-cold-pool-every-morning ICM agent personifies the notion of “office hip”--meaning, he’s not really hip, but compared to the rest of the corporate office he is. No ties, a brown leather bomber jacket for weekends and a big, fat, intimidating stogie.

* Joel Silver. Big-guy producer has a taste for the finer things--such as Dolce and Gabbana jackets that cloak his big-guy frame.

* Wesley Strick. This writer (“Cape Fear” remake) and director (the upcoming “The Tie that Binds”) perfected the romantic vampire look long before Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. He’s ultra thin, ageless, wears long black hair and an earring, and dark thermal shirts that look as if they want to sprout flowing, lacy sleeves.

* Jake Bloom. “Elegantly schleppy,” is how one observer described the show biz attorney’s style. His clothes are way oversized and relaxed, but somehow it works.

* Alec Baldwin. The clerks at Fred Segal in Santa Monica give Baldwin high style praise: “He’s always so impeccably dressed, never casual. In fact, he’s so formal, it almost looks as if he’s always wearing a tux.”
