Noumi Fischer; Violinist, Conductor and Teacher

Noumi Fischer, 87, Eagle Rock violinist and conductor who taught violin for six decades. Trained on violin from the age of 8, Fischer moved to Los Angeles as a young man and began working as a studio musician and teacher. He became concertmaster of the Warner Bros. recording orchestra and also recorded with MGM. He played in the Laguna Festival Orchestra and the Pasadena Symphony and frequently substituted for violinists with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In 1972, Fischer created and conducted his own chamber orchestra, Center Strings. He also served as conductor of the West Covina Symphony. Legally blind since 1967, the dedicated teacher took pride in his many students, among them Los Angeles Philharmonic members Irving Geller, William Heffernan and Roy Tanabe; Lisa Neilsen, concertmistress of the Heidelberg Opera; Diane Wittry, conductor of the Beaumont (Tex.) Symphony, and Fung Ho, founder of the Olympia (Wash.) symphony. On Jan. 7 in Eagle Rock.
