SIMI VALLEY : 1 Site Ruled Out for New Police Station
A panel of Simi Valley officials has eliminated one site from consideration for the city’s new police station, narrowing the possibilities from three to two.
Acting as the Civic Center Committee, Mayor Greg Stratton and Councilman Bill Davis on Wednesday scratched a site on city-owned property at the corner of Alamo Street and Tapo Canyon Road in front of City Hall.
“Police buildings tend to look like pillboxes,” Stratton said. “The front corner is not the place for this kind of building.”
The committee instead narrowed the field to city-owned property tucked behind City Hall near the senior center and land across Tapo Canyon Road, owned by the school district.
The City Council on Monday is scheduled to discuss in closed session the possible purchase of the school district property.
Simi Valley has applied for up to $3.7 million in federal quake relief funds to help cover the estimated $10-million cost of the station.
An additional $2.9 million could come from the city’s Community Development Agency, with the balance drawn from the city’s General Fund and special districts.
