CAMARILLO : Blue Cross Subsidiary Signs Deal for Land

A subsidiary of health-care giant Blue Cross of California has signed a deal with a development company to buy 61 acres in a business park on Camarillo’s east side.

According to Bill Teller, vice president of Pardee Construction Co., the deal with Woodland Hills-based WellPoint Health Networks was signed earlier this month.

“We believe they have chosen a great site for their office complex,” he said.

Teller would not disclose terms of the deal. Blue Cross confirmed Thursday that a contract has been signed, but said the deal had yet to be approved by the company’s board of directors. Company officials refused further comment.

Blue Cross officials first announced in November that the company was planning to build a 350,000- to 550,000-square-foot insurance sales and policy processing complex on the Pardee property in the Mission Oaks area.

The proposed two-story complex will replace two WellPoint offices in Newbury Park and Thousand Oaks. About 1,300 employees at the two sites are expected to be asked to commute to Camarillo.

If the city approves, construction is expected to start this year, with an opening in early 1997. Camarillo officials said they expect the Planning Commission to see detailed plans by March.
