COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Freestyle Relay Team Pulls Out Swim Win

UC Irvine’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Pat Keenan, Bret Foreman, Donny Richmond and Erik Walton set a personal best of 1 minute 27.69 seconds in the final event to give UC Irvine a 121-116 victory over Cal State Northridge in a men’s swimming and diving meet Saturday.

Keenan also won the 200 freestyle (1:44.55) and 200 butterfly (1:55.82) for the host Anteaters.

Gwen Yoshizumi won the 50 freestyle (26.12) and 200 backstroke (2:13.56) and Carrie Rowe won the 500 freestyle (5:23.40), helping UC Irvine’s women’s team to a 112-78 victory.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Chapman 94, UC Santa Cruz 63--Adam Dzierzynski scored 16 points, Stefan Mumaw had 15 points and Anthony Gonzales 12 on four three-point shots for host Chapman (13-6), which led, 54-33, at halftime.

“It was a good game for this time of year, to play a team that we had a chance to play everyone early. We caught Santa Cruz at a time when their three best players were not available, and we were able to accomplish some real positive things,” Chapman Coach Mike Bokosky said.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Concordia 79, Chapman 53--Camilla Jonzen scored 19 points and Jennifer Zylstra 14 to lead Concordia (13-9). Jonzen and Zylstra each made three three-point shots.

Melody Earle scored 10 points for Chapman (9-7).

Chapman committed 22 turnovers in the first half and 37 in the game. The Panthers made only seven of 25 (28%) field goals in the first half and trailed, 38-20.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:

Southern California College 54, Cal Baptist 36--Heather Woodruff scored 17 points to lead visiting Southern California College (12-8, 4-1). Teammate Carrie Elsaesser had 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Demetria Dixon had 15 points for Cal Baptist (9-11, 2-3).

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Cal State Fullerton 8, Point Loma Nazarene 1--Renee Ivy won her singles’ match, 6-1, 6-1, and her doubles’ match with Jennifer Canfield, 6-3, 6-3, for visiting Cal State Fullerton in the Titans’ season opener.

Canfield won her singles match, 6-2, 6-4. Debbie Denio (6-3, 6-4), Christa Hanson (6-2, 6-4) and Liz Larson (6-4, 6-4) also won in straight sets in singles for Fullerton. The Titans didn’t lose a set in doubles. Point Loma Nazarene is 0-2.

In exhibition baseball:

Long Beach State right fielder Jeff Liefer had four hits, including a three-run home run, and drove in five runs in a 12-8 victory over a professional alumni team Saturday at Blair Field.
