LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Anti-Gang Project’s Backers Appeal for County Funding
Hope in Youth supporters asked Los Angeles County employees Monday to point out waste in county spending so that enough money can be saved to fund the anti-gang program.
Last week, the Board of Supervisors denied Hope in Youth a $350,000 funding extension because of a $640-million shortfall in the county budget. Last year, the board gave the group $2.9 million in first-year funding.
The group is supported by some of the county’s most prominent religious leaders, including Cardinal Roger M. Mahony of the Los Angeles Catholic Archdiocese.
But Supervisor Gloria Molina said she has withdrawn her support because she believes Hope in Youth is not working with children who are most at risk of getting involved with gangs.
