Sentencing Postponed in Workers’ Comp Case: The sentencing of two people who pleaded no contest to conspiracy and fraud charges in one of California’s biggest workers’ compensation cases was postponed until Feb. 10 after one of the defendants, former Beverly Hills doctor Mark Kaplan, complained that he suffered chest pains while in his holding cell. A prosecutor with the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office accused Kaplan of faking a stroke to avoid sentencing, arguing that he used the ploy before in an unsuccessful bid to have his bail reduced. Kaplan and Polina Ioffe, his ex-wife and co-defendant, reached a plea agreement last month providing for prison terms and fines and restitution amounting to $7.5 million.
