Citizen Input Period Extended
County planners are allowing five more weeks for residents to suggest the scope of an environmental review of the controversial Newhall Ranch project, a 19-square-mile community proposed for an area west of Six Flags Magic Mountain.
The original 30-day comment period expired last week. Santa Clarita officials asked for additional time, citing the size of the project and the comment period’s overlap with the holiday season.
“I’m pleased they responded as we requested,” said Don Williams, a Santa Clarita planner.
As proposed by the Newhall Land & Farming Co., Newhall Ranch would ultimately include 22,330 homes. It is projected to attract 70,000 residents and include a 200-acre business park, a 215-acre golf course, 172 cumulative acres of parkland and sites for eight elementary schools, a high school and a junior high school.
The developer is hosting a series of Thursday-evening meetings this month to discuss Newhall Ranch’s traffic, land use and parkland planning.
Newhall Land officials hope to have the project up for review by the County Board of Supervisors in the fall of 1996 and begin construction by 1998.
