Police Officer Group Awards Scholarship
Who: Huntington Beach Police Officers’ Assn. and the Police Management Assn.
Contribution: Last month, the officers’ association awarded a $2,000 scholarship to Noelle Nakama, 18, a graduate of Brethren Christian High School and student at Cypress College. The officers also named Haydee Tillotson Citizen of the Year. Police Department employees were also recognized for their work during 1994. Recipients included Beth Backstrom, Civilian Employee of the Year; Officer Dean Michael, Uniform Officer of the Year; Detective Richard Butcher, Non-Uniform Officer of the Year; Officer Gary Faust, New Officer of the Year; Officer Dave McNaughton, Medal of Courage, and Officer Jim Lail and communications operator Marilu Canas, Meritorious Achievement award.

Church Gives $20,000 to Teach Dropouts
Who: St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church
Contribution: The church has donated $20,000 to the Orange County Teen Challenge program in Santa Ana. The donation will go toward launching a computer tutorial program to help teen-age dropouts complete their high school educations. St. Andrew’s and Teen Challenge are part of a network of Orange County churches and nonprofit organizations dedicated to helping at-risk youths and gang members lead successful lives.

Workers Collect Food and Money
Who: Employees at McDonnell Douglas
Contribution: They raised $15,420 last month to help the Orange County Food Bank fight hunger here. Throughout 1994, workers collected 18,582 pounds of food and raised $33,903 to fight hunger in the county. The company’s Huntington Beach office participated in 20 Volunteer Service Projects last year. * Volunteers needed:

Horse Grooms, Office Workers Sought
The Fran Joswick Therapeutic Riding Center needs volunteers to groom and tack horses. The center, which serves disabled children and adults, needs instructor assistants to work as spotters and stirrup adjusters. The center also is seeking office workers. For information, call (714) 240-8441.

IRVINE
Seniors Served by Information Booth
Volunteers are needed to work in a new information booth at the Rancho Senior Center in Irvine. Volunteers must work several hours each week to give seniors information about the various programs offered at the center, located at 3 Sandburg Way.
