PLACENTIA : 2 Schools Win MWD Grant for Project

Share

Two schools have received a $452 “mini-grant” from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to study the relationship of the Santa Ana River to North County’s drinking water.

Esperanza High School teacher Frank Jahn will combine skills with Stumpf Elementary School teacher Donelda Warhurst for a cooperative program. As part of the program, Jahn’s students will learn how percolation removes bacteria from well water, then create a model to teach the concept to the younger students at Stumpf.

The model will show the geology of the river basin, the idea of an aquifer and how it helps to filter out bacteria, along with other water quality issues.

MWD spokeswoman Sue Meltzer said the team effort was one of a dozen mini-grant winners from the 100 applications submitted by teachers in five of the six Southern California counties that purchase MWD water.

The MWD is a regional water agency that brings water from Northern California to sell to water districts and other public agencies in Southern California. About 60% of the drinking water in Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and Ventura counties is piped in by the MWD.
