VENTURA : Police Accept Raises That Will Total 7%

Share

Ventura police have accepted a new, two-year contract that will raise their salaries by 5% starting in July and by an additional 2% beginning in July, 1996.

When the full 7% raise takes effect in 1996, starting pay will begin at approximately $36,500 for officers, $43,900 for corporals and $49,700 for sergeants, city officials said.

The total raise for the officers will cost the city about $535,000, said Terry Adelman, the city’s director of management resources. The city already faces a deficit next year of about $750,000, he said, and this raise will add to that figure.

“We don’t have the expected funds to cover this yet,” he said. “We have to figure out how to get them.”

Councilman Gregory L. Carson said he hoped the Police Department could find the money for the raises within its own budget, which in the past has had surpluses of well over $500,000.

After holding down police salaries for two years, Carson and Councilman Gary Tuttle said, it seemed time to bring their pay up to area averages and to reward them for their work.

“It’s time to afford it,” Tuttle said.
