Beach Crowds Expected Over Warm Weekend

Unseasonably warm temperatures, cloudless skies and higher-than-average surf are expected to draw a large crowd to county beaches this weekend.

But officials warned beach-goers to beware of strong riptides.

“It’s hard to say what the surf will be like,” lifeguard Craig Sap said. No rescues were reported this week despite the higher-than-usual waves Thursday and Friday, he said.

“It’s mostly surfers out there,” he said, adding that he expected the surf to return to normal sometime this weekend.

Air temperatures hit 90 degrees in Oxnard and hovered in the mid-80s along the beach for most of Friday afternoon while waves crested at three to five feet, officials with the National Weather Service reported.

The summery conditions are expected to wane through the weekend, meteorologist Clay Morgan said, as the surf returns to normal and temperatures cool.

Morgan forecast temperatures in the high 70s along the coast and the low 80s further inland Saturday. He forecast slightly cooler temperatures for Sunday.

He said skies should remain sunny but that there is a chance of dense fog Saturday night and early Sunday morning.
