AGOURA HILLS : Historic Trail Plan to Be Discussed

Share

Plans for a hiking trail that marks the 1,200-mile journey of Spanish explorer Juan Bautista De Anza will be displayed Thursday to allow comments from Ventura County residents, officials said.

The historic trail, commissioned by Congress in 1990, will stretch from Mexico to San Francisco and will include a 60-mile jaunt across Ventura County’s mountains and beaches.

About half of the Ventura County leg will be covered by existing trails. But another 30 miles of new trail will be cut to commemorate the traveler, who between 1775 and 1776 led a contingent of 240 Spanish colonists across deserts and mountains to a new home in Northern California.

Public hearings will allow property owners, historians, cyclists, equestrians, hikers and others to comment on plans for the trail, which will cut through the Santa Monica Mountains.

The two hearings will be held at 1 and 7 p.m. Thursday at the Club Canyon Banquet Room in the Whizin Shopping Center, 28912 Roadside Drive, Agoura Hills.
