An 81-year-old Reseda woman was killed and her passenger critically injured after their car was broadsided by a man who drove through a red light Monday afternoon, authorities said.

Margaret Fuerstenberg died at West Hills Hospital half an hour after she pulled out of a parking lot at the Fallbrook Mall at 1:30 p.m. and was struck by a car driven by a 64-year-old man headed south on Fallbrook Avenue, said Officer Bill Mulvihill of the Los Angeles Police Department. Witnesses said the man ran the traffic signal at Criswell Street, Mulvihill said.

The man, whose leg was broken in the accident, “was not alert,” when paramedics arrived at the scene, said Bob Collis of the Los Angeles City Fire Department. He was in serious condition at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, Collis said.
