Ameritech Won’t Fight Local Phone Competition: The company said it will no longer demand that regulators allow it into the long-distance business in exchange for opening its local network to other companies. With the move, Ameritech Corp. joins Nynex Corp. in taking a more accommodating stance on demands for competition in local telephoning. Nynex has agreed to rule changes in New York state and faces competition from cable TV and other companies. Ameritech, which provides local phone service in five Midwestern states, said it hopes it can speed up the process for getting into long-distance by welcoming local competition. It took the action in a filing with Illinois regulators, largely agreeing to rules for greater competition.
