Planners Approve Shopping Center

A 39-acre Camarillo parcel will soon be the home of a 116,000-square-foot Target store after a vote of the city Planning Commission this week.

The site, south of the Ventura Freeway and west of Las Posas Road, will also house several other large retailers and a handful of restaurants, according to Reed Henkelman, a vice president for CB Commercial, the firm that is coordinating the leasing arrangements for the shopping center.

The commissioners voted unanimously in favor of the development at their meeting Tuesday.

Along with the Target store, which will anchor the site, the shopping center will feature a Ross Dress for Less, a Bed, Bath and Beyond, a home store and four other retailers. The center is being developed by two Orange County-based investment partnerships, JB2H and Norcan Inc.

In other action, the commission delayed consideration of a request by Camarillo developer Harout Keshmeshian to build 59 houses on a 60-acre parcel near the intersection of Los Coyotes Place and Calle Dia in the city’s east side.

During Tuesday’s meeting, residents expressed concerns about construction noise, grading, dust control and parking intrusions by the development company’s employees, as well as concerns about the geological fitness of the site.

The subdivision proposal will come back before the commission for consideration at its Feb. 21 meeting after further study by staff.
