GOINGS ON : It’s a Week of Variety Entertainment in S.B. : On tap are Chinese acrobats, a great symphony orchestra, musical theater, folk music, plays and many other events.

Simply put, there is a little something for everyone in Santa Barbara over the next seven days. OK, make that a lot of something for everyone. Here’s the list:

Are you ready to be mesmerized? The acclaimed Peking Acrobats will perform their remarkable maneuvers at Santa Barbara’s Lobero Theater tonight, as they proceed on a 40-city tour of the United States. Cast members of the Santa Barbara Civic Light Opera will be at their tap-dancing best in a production of the Broadway musical “42nd Street.” It’s the story of a chorus girl from a small town who becomes an overnight sensation when she takes over a leading role after the star breaks her leg. Inspired by the 1933 Busby Berkeley movie, “42nd Street” won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1981.

Shows are Wednesday through Saturday at 8 p.m., Sunday at 7 p.m., with 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday matinees. There will be an additional matinee Wednesday at 3 p.m. Tickets range from $24.50 to $32.50 with children’s tickets at half price Sunday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. James Donlon and Company will take a surreal look at how women survive in a world full of men, with the American premiere of “Purge,” opening Friday at Santa Barbara’s Center Stage Theater.

Through dreamlike travels through time and space, the four cast members will delve into the many emotions women confront, from frustration to anger to love. The limited-run show will be presented again Saturday and Feb. 17 and 18. Show time is 8 p.m. for all performances. Tickets are $12. Call 963-0408. Pianist Steve Spracklen, the man behind the showboat music of the Mississippi Queen and the Delta Queen, will join the UC Santa Barbara Jazz Orchestra on Friday for a “Ragtime, Blues, and Jazz” concert at the university’s Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall. The program will include W.R. Krell’s “Mississippi Rag,” John W. Boone’s “Boone’s Rag Medley 1,” Eubie Blake’s “Charleston Rag,” Jelly Roll Morton’s “The Pearls,” Abe Olman’s “Winter Garden Rag,” and Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer” and “Maple Leaf Rag.” Show time is 8 p.m. General admission is $15. Carpinteria’s Seaside Theatre Company will open a run of Robert Harling’s “Steel Magnolias,” Friday, at the Carpinteria Arts and Lectures Center. The touching, yet humorous story of six women who share their inner feelings in the setting of a hair salon, will run through March 5. Britain’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will visit Santa Barbara’s Arlington Theatre on Saturday. Conductor Yuri Temirkanov will lead the 50-year-old ensemble in Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade,” and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. The Tachi Yokuts Dancers of Central California will present traditional Native American songs and the ceremonial dance of the Bear on Saturday at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. The performance is part of the museum’s California Indian Culture Project. The program will begin at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors 65 and older and children 13 to 17, and $3 for children 2 to 12. Call 682-4711. Actor Roland Frantz will pay tribute to his father Robert, a former steel mill worker, in the one-man show “The 28 Inch Mill,” tonight through Saturday at Santa Barbara’s Westmont College. Portraying a 70-year-old retired steel worker, the younger Frantz will act out his father’s memoirs. Frantz is the founding artistic director of the Shakespearean troupe “A Company of Players.” Show time is 8 p.m. each night. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors. Call 565-1040. Award-winning chamber ensemble The Ying Quartet will be in concert at UCSB’s Campbell Hall beginning at 8 p.m. Tuesday. The program will include works by Mozart, Schubert and Ralph Shapey, who composed a piece in honor of the group winning the prestigious Naumburg Chamber Music Award in 1993. Bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley and his Clinch Mountain Boys will bring the music of the Appalachian Mountains to Santa Barbara’s Veterans’ Memorial Hall on Tuesday in a concert presented by the Santa Barbara Society for Traditional Music. Stanley, the first recipient of the “Traditional American Music” award given by The National Endowment for the Arts, has been performing bluegrass for 49 years.
