SIMI VALLEY : Access Sways Choice of Police Station Site

Share

Opting for high visibility for the city’s new police station, the Simi Valley City Council has decided to build the facility at Alamo Street and Tapo Canyon Road.

The council voted 5 to 0 Monday night to build the station on the southeast corner of the city’s Civic Center property.

Arguments in favor of the corner site won out despite last-minute information that indicated possible savings in building the station between the courthouse and senior center, which is also in the Civic Center area.

The architect working on the plans disagreed, saying there would be no substantial difference in cost at either site.

Mayor Greg Stratton and Councilman Bill Davis had supported building the 47,000-square-foot structure between the East County Courthouse and the Simi Valley Senior Center, but changed their minds because of the superior access for the corner site.

“I think access outweighs proximity to City Hall or the courthouse,” said Sandi Webb.

The two sites are about half a block apart.

Construction for the station is expected to cost about $10 million and begin late this year.
