With its historic downtown, Orange is one of the county’s oldest towns.

An 1888 real estate advertisement for Orange touted the city as a “paradise for homes” with “cheap land and rich soil.”

The ad shows a map of late 19th-Century Southern California drawn onto a large orange. The document notes that the city has an “elegant hotel” and “TWO railroads,” as well as a park, a public library and five churches. It goes on to say that the city has “the most water and the finest climate.”

The ad was printed just before what is today Orange County broke away from Los Angeles County. So the ad ends by stating: “Be sure to visit Orange, Los Angeles County, Cal.”
