LAKE FOREST : City Gives Backing, $5,000 to Committee

Council members have cemented the city’s relationship with the Lake Forest Activities Committee, allowing use of the city logo and providing $5,000 in seed money to the group.

However, because the nonprofit organization is not an official city committee, approval came on a 3-2 vote, with Councilwomen Ann Van Haun and Kathryn McCullough dissenting. Composed of local volunteers, the committee organizes major community events such as the Lake Forest Independence Day Parade.

“Since it isn’t an actual city group, when they send out letters asking for donations, (potential donors) could be confused that the city is asking for money,” Van Haun said.

The $5,000 influx of cash will be used by the committee as a greens deposit for the annual city golf tournament.

Although the city seldom backs the group’s efforts with cash, city staff time is used to help organize events, and city-paid sheriff’s deputies assist with traffic management.
