MONEY TALKS: After spending a whopping $133,000 in her unsuccessful bid for a Ventura County supervisor’s seat, Trudi Loh says she intends to run a much leaner campaign for the Thousand Oaks City Council (B6). . . . Loh even promises to push for new campaign finance reforms if elected. But Loh, who doled out nearly $45,000 of her own money in the supervisor’s race, is hesitant to say how much she is willing to dip into her pockets this time around. Said Loh: “I’m still crunching numbers.”

HOT WHEELS: Oxnard ranked 45th in California for auto thefts in 1993, according to a new survey of 306 cities (A3). . . . Simi Valley posted 120th and Thousand Oaks 129th in the National Insurance Crime Bureau report, which surveyed cities with a population of at least 100,000. . . . Oxnard Detective Peter Nicolle, whose city reported 1,148 vehicles stolen in 1993, said that Buick Regals were a favorite target. But, Nicolle added, “any car with the keys in it is the most popular car to steal.”

CHIEF RESIGNS: After less than a year on the job, Simi Valley Police Chief Willard R. Schlieter announced Thursday that he is stepping down (B4). . . . Schlieter declined comment on his departure. . . . But some sources said the chief’s top commanders were unhappy with his management style. “He was in way over his head,” said a source familiar with the department’s management. “He lost the respect of his employees, and he lost control of the department.”

IN THE DUMPS: As he offered his own proposal for disposing of West County trash after Bailard Landfill in Oxnard closes, Fillmore Councilman Roger Campbell said the only way the waste issue is going to be resolved is to put politics aside (B1). . . . “Let’s keep the politics out of it and look at this from a practical standpoint,” he said. . . . Yet at the same time he is working hard to resolve to the trash problem, Campbell has hinted that he might be a candidate for supervisor next year.
