Louisiana-Pacific Ends Chlorine Use at Pulp Plant: The wood-products giant announced that its Samoa, Calif., pulp mill will no longer use chlorine, a common chemical in the paper-making industry that has drawn fire from environmentalists. Use of chlorine as a bleaching agent produces pollutants that include dioxin, which is linked to cancer, birth defects and infertility. The plant is the first of its kind in North America to avoid chlorine use.
