From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Israeli warplanes and artillery blasted guerrilla targets in southern Lebanon after Iranian-backed militants attacked an Israeli border enclave. Five people were killed, security sources said--two Lebanese civilians, two guerrillas and a member of the Israeli-affiliated South Lebanon Army militia. The Shiite Muslim extremist group Hezbollah, Iran’s main ally in Lebanon, claimed responsibility for attacks earlier in the day on at least 12 outposts of Israeli and SLA troops. Israel’s six-hour retaliation included three air raids and thousands of artillery shells, raising the specter of a major showdown on the last flaring Arab-Israeli war front.
