A 23-year-old college student took out papers to run for the vacant seat on the Thousand Oaks City Council this week, joining a crowded field of 10 possible candidates.

Ken Miller, a political science major at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, said he will decide in the next week whether he will officially become a candidate.

The fifth seat on the council has been empty since Frank Schillo resigned in December to join the Ventura County Board of Supervisors.

Of the 10 residents who have asked for applications, only Compton homicide Detective Mike Markey has completed the paperwork and become a certified candidate.

Miller, who works part time in a real estate office and as a gas station attendant, said he aspires to a career in politics.

“It’s really a passion for me,” Miller said.

He moved to Thousand Oaks in 1979 with his family and lives in the Oakbrook neighborhood.

Other candidates who have taken out papers are dentist Greg Cole, disabled advocate John Ellis, Planning Commissioner Forrest Frields, attorney Trudi Loh, activist Nick Quidwai, paralegal Eileen Reimers, businessman Ramaul Rush and mobile carwash owner Lance Winslow.
