WOMEN’S BASKETBALL : USC Loses to No. 5 Stanford

USC, outscored by 14 points in the first half, lost to No. 5-ranked Stanford, 71-52, in a Pacific 10 women’s basketball game Thursday night before 1,586 at USC’s Lyon Center.
Anita Kaplan, a 6-5 senior center, scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Cardinal, 21-2 overall and 12-1 in the Pac-10. Tina Thompson had 14 points and Audrey Gomez 13 for the Trojans (15-7, 8-6), who trailed, 38-24, at halftime.

UCLA 87, California 67--Laura Collins had a career-high 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Bruins (10-13, 5-8) over the Bears (9-13, 4-9) before 252 at Pauley Pavilion.
The Bruins led, 38-35, early in the second half but went on a 17-0 run to lead, 55-35, with 14:09 left. Allison Arredondo, who finished with 17 points, led the spurt with three three-pointers.
The Bruins, who shot 52.9% (36 of 68), have won three of their last four games.
