Honors Are Conferred for Black Community Service

SANTA ANA — Several community leaders, educators, business people and a Buena Park high school senior were honored Saturday for their service to Orange County’s black community.
The fifth annual awards were presented by the Orange County chapter of the NAACP and the city of Santa Ana.
“The awards are for distinctive service,” said James Tippins, president of the local NAACP chapter. “They stood out from 25 nominees.”
The winners are:
* William Mack, a local businessman, who received the business award.
* The Rev. Thomas Shipp, pastor at Calvary Church in Santa Ana, who received the clergy award.
* Horace Mitchell, a vice chancellor at UC Irvine, and Eugene M. Wheeler, president of 100 Black Men of Orange County, who were honored for individual community service.
* Chuck Mosley, chairman of the MWB Foundation, whose firm was honored for community service, including organizing this year’s Black History Parade.
* Barbara Hill, a teacher at Madison Elementary School in Santa Ana, and Fred S. Calhoun, of Cypress College, who received the education awards.
* Kathryn McCullough, a Lake Forest City Council member, who received the government award.
* Shermekka Starks, a senior at Buena Park High School, received the youth award.
