World IN BRIEF : MIDEAST : Settlers Try to Keep Arabs from Mosque
Scores of Jewish settlers kicked and shoved Arab worshipers and Israeli troops next to the Hebron mosque where a settler killed about 30 Palestinians at prayer one year ago, witnesses said. They said soldiers did little to stop about 60 settlers from blocking Palestinians from entering the mosque for a Muslim holiday. Settlers trying to enter the mosque clashed with military police guarding the site, declared temporarily off limits to Jewish worshipers to limit friction. “A number of Israelis were detained after they rioted and clashed with military police there,” an army spokesman said.
