Eight weeks after Republicans assumed control of Congress, Americans are dubious about central elements of the GOP’s legislative agenda, according to a New York Times/CBS poll.

The poll, published in today’s editions of the newspaper, found that a majority of those surveyed believe that Congress should stress jobs and crime control--issues that have not been priorities for Republicans this year.

On another key issue, 69% of the 1,190 adults surveyed by telephone said they favor the ban on assault weapons that the Republicans have vowed to overturn.
