Nation IN BRIEF : SOUTH CAROLINA : Mother’s Lawyers Fail to Disclose Defense

Lawyers for Susan Smith refused to say whether they will pursue an insanity defense for the mother who confessed to killing her two young sons. Smith “remains unable to enter any plea to the charges against her,” lawyers David Bruck and Judy Clarke said. However, they agreed to allow state doctors to examine Smith, 23, to see if she is competent to stand trial for the Oct. 25 drowning deaths of her sons, Michael, 3, and Alex, 14 months.
