Nation IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Endeavour Lifts Off on Record Mission

The space shuttle Endeavour punched through a hole in thick, low clouds hanging over Kennedy Space Center in a middle-of-the-night launch on NASA’s longest planned shuttle flight yet--a 15 1/2-day mission to study the far reaches of the universe. Seven astronauts boarded the fueled spaceship for the late Wednesday liftoff. The gloomy weather forecast had threatened to force a postponement of the launch, but conditions steadily improved as launch time grew near.
