Doris Carson, 82; Starred in Broadway Musical Comedies

Doris Carson, 82, Broadway musical comedy star of such shows as “Cat and the Fiddle” and “On Your Toes.” The daughter of vaudeville comedian James B. Carson, she understudied Ruby Keeler in the Gershwin musical “Show Girl” and substituted for Miss Keeler for two weeks. That successful break prompted her selection as the ingenue lead opposite Ray Bolger in Rodgers and Hart’s “On Your Toes” in 1936. She also appeared in “Cat and the Fiddle,” “Strike Up the Band” and “Luana” on Broadway, and in London in “Nymph Errant” and “Royal Exchange.” In 1941, Miss Carson portrayed Lady Jane in a production of “Rose Marie” at the Hollywood Bowl. Married to Leonard Weisbard, she had lived in the California desert for several years. On Feb. 20 in Rancho Mirage.
