THE HIDDEN LIFE OF DOGS by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas (Pocket Star Books: $5.99; 148 pp., illustrated). Dog lovers will enjoy Thomas’ anecdotes and speculations about canine behavior, and some of her observations are telling. But she lets her enthusiasm for her dogs-as-people-in-fur-coats theory carry her away: When one dog has puppies, Thomas asserts the husky “had a husband who loved her plus the support and assistance of everyone around her.” If the dog had problems, Thomas would probably enroll her in a 12-step program.
