SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Two people, possibly an adult man and a girl, were killed when their car collided with an oncoming vehicle and burst into flames, burning the occupants beyond recognition, authorities said.

A Valencia woman in the other car was also critically injured in the Sunday collision, said Officer Wendy Moore of the California Highway Patrol.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation, but rain is believed to have been a factor, police said.

The crash occurred at 12:38 p.m. on California 126 near San Martinez Road, Moore said, when the driver of an eastbound Toyota lost control on the slick road.

“The vehicle slid sideways into the westbound lane where it was struck broadside by an oncoming 1991 Nissan Maxima,” Moore said. “Upon impact, (the Toyota) burst into flames.”

An identification card from Northern California was found in the vehicle, but it does not appear to match either of the occupants, Moore said.

The bodies will be identified using dental records, said David Campbell, an investigator for the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.

“If we get dental X-rays within the next couple of days, we should be able to make identifications by the end of the week,” he said.

Yvette Higgins, 27, the front-seat passenger in the Nissan, was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia.

Her husband, Patrick, 36, and their son, Tylor, 2, each received moderate injuries in the accident, Moore said.
