LA MIRADA : Signs Near Schools to Tout Stiffer Penalties

Share

City officials have decided to post signs around public schools warning that anyone convicted of violating gun or drug laws near a school faces stiffer penalties.

The signs, which identify school campuses and nearby areas as gun- and drug-free zones, call attention to state laws that provide jail terms of up to seven additional years for drug or weapons violations within 1,000 feet of a school.

Officials approved the signs, which will cost a total of $1,050, in an effort to deter crimes around schools, Councilman Wayne Rew said.

A methamphetamine lab was discovered near a school last year, and officials have been concerned about drug use among the city’s youth, said Tom Robinson, the city’s community development director.
