L.A. Marathon

As I neared the 23-mile mark on the first annual Los Angeles Marathon bicycle tour (March 5), I rode through some glass and got a flat. At the time, I was just chatting with two young women about how great the ride had been up to that point. As my tire blew, I said, “Oh, and me with no spare tube.” Well, they pulled over and offered me a tube with no mention of money or repayment. This is what the marathon and the bike tour are about. Neighbors helping each other out. I know I will never see these ladies again and want to thank them for their unselfish act.

* One big hurrah and a special thank you to all the volunteers and those who came out in the rain to support us and cheer us on. This is something we runners must do. Storm or no storm. Thank you, Los Angeles, for your strength, your diversity and your determined spirit, and for showing me what you’ve got to offer--the best.
