More than 100 people crowded Heritage Square in Oxnard on Sunday to eat, dance and hear the smooth sounds and rumba beat of Tabu Ley Rochereau and Orchestra Afrisa International.

The popular Zaire band helped kick off “Sundays at the Square,” an international music series that will run through April 9 downtown.

A longtime listener of the African band on local radio, Mike Wilson of Oxnard said he could not believe that Tabu Ley Rochereau was going to perform locally.

“He’s the Tony Bennett of Africa,” Wilson exclaimed of the soukous dance musician.

Linda Brown, who helped organize the program, said, “Sundays at the Square” was designed to celebrate Black History Month but has grown into a multicultural event.

Future Sundays will feature Cajun, Latin, Celtic and Island music, Brown said.
