Nation IN BRIEF : NATIONWIDE : AZT Seen Hastening Some AIDS Deaths

AIDS patients whose viruses develop resistance to the drug AZT are nearly three times more likely to die within a year than those who either haven’t taken the drug, or whose viruses remain susceptible to AZT. Scientists say they aren’t sure why this is so, but fear that the drug may actually be pushing the human immunodeficiency virus to mutate more rapidly--not only acquiring the ability to resist AZT, but making the disease proceed more rapidly as well.
