The NCAA’s eligibility committee ruled Wednesday that Arizona’s Ben Davis must sit out three NCAA tournament games for receiving improper benefits. Davis can rejoin the Wildcats if they reach the Midwest Regional finals.

After hearing an appeal by phone, the committee upheld a staff decision Tuesday that Davis, a junior center, must repay some $3,300 in impermissible benefits before the start of the next school year.

Arizona (23-7) plays Miami of Ohio (22-6) today in Dayton, Ohio.

With a 563-385 career record, he ranks ninth among active NCAA Division I coaches in wins.

“I wanted to get out of coaching on my own terms,” Colson said. “How many do you know in this business that are able to do that?”

Colson, 61, formerly was head coach at New Mexico, Pepperdine and Valdosta (Ga.) State.
