PAN AM GAMES ROUNDUP : Martino Wins Fourth Gold; U.S. Swimmers Get 51 Medals

Angel Martino, still undecided about swimming through the 1996 Olympics, won her fourth Pan American Games gold medal Friday night, breaking the meet 50-meter freestyle record by 0.61 of a second. Martino, from Americus, Ga., was timed in 25.40.

The U.S. team had its best day with five golds in six events, giving it 22 golds in 32 races. It had 51 swimming medals overall.

Seven U.S. swimmers won three gold medals each. Barbara Bedford, Trina Jackson, Seth van Neerden and Jon Olsen got their third golds, joining Josh Davis, Cristina Teuscher and Amy Van Dyken.

Alexandra Given of New Haven, Conn., won the women’s hammer throw at 193 feet 4 inches.

Steve Fritz of Manhattan, Kan., the decathlon favorite, withdrew because of tendinitis in his right leg.

Cyclist Janie Eickoff of Wilmington, Del., won the 3,000-meter individual pursuit in record time.

In tennis, Ann Grossman of Grove City, Ohio, reached the women’s singles final, where she’ll play Florenica Labat of Argentina.

The U.S. women’s volleyball team gained the final against Cuba by sweeping Canada. The American men joined the women after a marathon match with Cuba, ending with a 16-14 final set advantage.
