CARUSO’S CAREER

What a great situation it would be if Det. Kelly could pop up every few “NYPD Blue” episodes and still allow David Caruso to make films (“Det. Kelly’s Public Hell,” by Daniel Howard Cerone, March 12).

But that doesn’t seem realistic at this point, so I’ll just have to pat myself on the back for having the intuition to tape the whole season that Caruso appeared. This way, I can pop an episode in the VCR when I need a Kelly fix.

No one questions any of the industry moguls when they make a move, so hurray for an actor who gets the opportunity to do what he wants to do and get to a level in his career where he can pick his own scripts and work with choice directors.

I remember a singer named Lou Monte who sold millions of records. In fact, he had the first million-record seller for Reprise, legitimizing that label for Frank Sinatra and Mo Ostin. His life took a dramatic twist and he lost his wife and child to cancer. He tried in vain to reach out to an industry that he loved so much and needed a break to get back on track. Not one person in this industry reached out to him and he died an alcoholic and broken man.

I loved my uncle very much. So when I see a David Caruso reach for his dream, I say, “Do it for all of us who never get there and for the ones that did and were forgotten.”
